Our Values
We are a values driven practice, built on the two pillars of caring for our client, and caring for our community.
We care for our clients, so we want to give them expert legal services and advice. We understand that that advice doesn’t occur in a vacuum. It needs to be relatable, it needs to be practical and it needs to be fit for purpose for the particular client situation.
We believe strongly that, as a law firm in a regional area, we have a role to play contributing to the fabric of our community.
We have a genuine interest in our practice areas. We work in a cohesive and collaborative manner to achieve the best outcomes for our clients.
We have a long-term mindset.
We’re going to serve this community for a very long time, and therefore we strive to bring integrity to everything we do. We are committed to maintaining a really high, professional standard, especially when navigating complex conflicts of interests that frequently arise in small towns.
The Halliday Story
Still serving our community
B.G. Halliday Solicitors Pty Ltd was founded by Brendan Halliday, an established Beechworth lawyer, in 2006. After Brendan was diagnosed with a serious illness, he approached Matt Grogan in 2014, to see if Matt would be interested in taking the practice on. Interested, but not keen to go it alone, Matt approached Helen McGowan as a potential partner. Helen – who was instrumental in setting up the Hume Riviera Community Legal Practice; a respected local lawyer who had worked across many regional practices; and completing a Law PhD – was up for the challenge! Helen and Matt decided to keep the Halliday name, to honour the work of Brendan Halliday and maintain the goodwill that had been built up within the community. Most of Brendan’s staff stayed on, and were immensely helpful throughout the transition period.
Halliday Solicitors started off in a small building in Beechworth and maintained an outpost in Yackandandah. Our current home is within the Old Beechworth Gaol precinct, and as time’s gone by, we’ve grown our staff to meet growing legal needs within our community. In 2022, Helen retired from practice, and Matt became principal lawyer. In January 2023, we merged with ACM Conveyancing, and subsequently established a physical presence in Myrtleford. With offices in Beechworth, Myrtleford, and Yackandandah (staffed on Tuesdays), we continue to service North East Victoria and beyond.
